Traditional Animation Research

"Traditional animation, sometimes referred to as cel animation, is one of the older forms of animation, in it the animator draws every frame to create the animation sequence. Just like they used to do in the old days of Disney. If you’ve ever had one of those flip-books when you were a kid, you’ll know what I mean. Sequential drawings screened quickly one after another create the illusion of movement." https://www.bloopanimation.com/types-of-animation/ "3D is everywhere, employed at every available opportunity. I'm not referring to animated films in 3D, rather the basic 3D used in advertising: TV broadcast design, music videos, basically, everywhere in the motion design world. It has never been so easy to create something in 3D, even more so after the popularization of easy to use professional software such as Cinema 4D, and their associated tutorials. You only have to look at youtube where thousands of teenagers upload logos to identify their gaming parties, bur...

Week 9 Advisor Session

Tanya's Feedback The illustration style is looking great but the animation needs to be pushed further - it needs to be far more dramatic and unrealistic to be humorous and attention grabbing. Refer back to Thelwell for examples of how to make the relationship between the pony and rider have more tension and how to give the horse more of personality. Definitely don't try to make 9 gifs - aim for 3! Make the gifs last slightly longer - tell more of the story, set up what happens before the car passes the horse and show more of what happens afterwards. Make your scenarios look very high risk for the riders! The text is a bit hard to read so make it stand out more. Don't use a square canvas, make it a wide rectangle as that is the most common image shape used on social media.

Notes On Writing Report

Writing Workshop Notes: Tone should be reflective more than explaining every little thing you have done Intro should be about 75 words Restate central proposition Use active terms You’ve produced a strategic piece of work What is your aim? What is your design’s function? What is your design approach? Processes, methods? How you applied them? How your iteration started to develop and respond in relation to more testing What were your designs generated in response to? Focus down into the refinement - what were the criteria you brought to your refinement? How did you fine-tune your project? What challenges/pivots/developments did you face and how did these change your project? How did peer and tutor feedback get you to think more critically about your work? How are you contributing to the discourse of design in a particular way? How are you going to influence the conversations/conventions of the future? Are you seeking to provoke someone? How did this inform your way of thin...

Week 7 Advisor Session

Caroline's Feedback The planning for your gifs is looking great - now just start making them! Next time it would be easier to display your website as a print out on the wall that users can interact with to give you feedback as it is hard to understand and critique the bigger picture of the webpage when you are scrolling through it on screen. When using this element of the road and the user journeying along it as they scroll in your website, perhaps you could make the road different as it goes along (e.g. very windy in places, very narrow, a gravel road, a forest road, a road near the beach) and explain how drivers should react to horses in each different road scenario.

Study Break Reflection

As per my 10/5 report I had a lot of work and development planned for the study break to try and set myself in good stead for the final half of semester. Unfortunately not everything always goes planned. I unexpectedly had to fly home to Invercargill in a rush during the holidays as one of my horses suddenly became very ill and we were initially quite fearful that she would have to be put to sleep. Luckily she perked up and the situation wasn't immediately dire but it was still a stressful and unplanned break that stopped me from completing any work for uni. Because of this unexpected departure from Wellington, by this first class of the final half of semester I haven't ticked every item off of my study break to-do list, but I feel like I am still in an ok position going into the last term. I have planned the visuals and text for 10 gifs for my social media campaign and I have developed my idea for a website through various ideation sessions into a working prototype that I ...
