10/5 Report Of Super Crit

I found my critique experience with my advisor very useful as it has set me up with lots to work on over the long break and a clear direction to head in with my project. I also found the opportunity to gain critique from peers you might not normally speak to useful as it meant my work was looked over with fresh eyes and fresh perspectives. I believe super crit worked ok, but I do think that the structure of the 'First Showing' in week two where half the students stayed at their work while the other half roamed was slightly better as I found when I was wandering around looking at other student's work on Friday I often wanted to ask about what I saw but no-one was with their work to help explain it. In saying that I do think having an advisor that you had signed up to in advance worked far better than the 'First Showing' as you were able to get critique on your work from someone who could definitely provide helpful and relevant feedback. During the break I want to w...

Week 6 Super Crit

Caroline's Critique It's a nice idea to talk to riders as well as drivers It's also a good idea to include more characters and their designs are working well Prefer moving image over still but need to include text with it to explain it Make all illustrations for social media animated gifs Might not need a booklet if going with a social media campaign - think of how someone from outside NZ will encounter your project Tourists and urban people are going to use devices so design for that platform - they will be looking for info on the internet (so website and social media are the most important) UX/UI - Design for cell phone viewing Show both good and bad behaviour for the educational side as people may be more likely to adopt new behaviour if they see the consequences of unsafe behaviour Make the car more obvious in the illustrations (In relation to the Maori boy riding bareback) On the East coast you're not likely to see people wearing helmets, but ...

https://www.nzta.govt.nz https://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/roadcode/about-other-road-users/sharing-road-with-horse-riders/ This is the NZTA's section in the online road code about how to behave when encountering horse riders and drivers on the road. It does not clearly illustrate the desired behaviour and the information is quite ambiguous, such as "slow down" and "pass wide" - people who do not know horses need to be told exact speeds and distances or else they will put themselves, horses and riders at risk. It is also not very appealing design wise. https://www.nzta.govt.nz/safety/driving-safely/visiting-drivers/ This is the NZTA's section for tourist drivers. From here I was directed to an information pamphlet and an outside website that goes into more detail about driving in New Zealand. https://www.nzta.govt.nz/assets/resources/driving-in-nz/docs/driving-in-nz-english.pdf A pamphlet about driving in New Zealand from the NZTA. Meeting With Vicki Karaminas

This morning I met with a fashion lecturer, Vicki, to get critique on my project (as she is a keen equestrian). She really liked where I was going with my illustrations by giving the horse a big personality/making the horse the centre of attention and making the content quite humorous. She also really liked the comic strips as she felt the multiple illustrations help tell the story. Her main feedback was that perhaps I could look into educating the riders as well by producing illustrations targeted at them, for example: never ride on the road without a hi-vis vest, always wear a helmet etc.

Project Summary Update

The Problem In an ideal world, horses would not need to be on the road. Unfortunately, limited off-road equine areas forces most horses to be exercised on public roads. While many motorists are considerate to horses, slowing down and allowing plenty of room while passing, there is a large number who are not, which can lead to the injury or even death of humans and horses. The rapid expansion of urban boundaries, rising population, increasing immigration, and the tourism boom mean that more encounters between equine road users and ignorant motorists are likely to occur and the need for education becomes more important. My campaign uses forward thinking to look ahead at the growing number of people on the roads in general and the increasing number of people driving in New Zealand who are used to different driving experiences/road environments, and provide preventative educational material. There are already many accidents and near misses involving equine road users on New Zealand p...

Week 5 Advisor Session

Chat With Tanya The change back to an urban-dwelling target audience and inclusion of tourists is a great idea With the metaphorical illustrations (lightening, dynamite etc) keep the shape of the horse but make the mane and tail or legs the abstracted part Work on producing an animated gif for next week's super crit Animation: A lot of the movement of the animation is in the legs - look at making the neck and mane move Add drama in the flailing arms etc of the rider (when I add a rider) When it's hooves strike the road surface are there sparks etc? Evidence of how it interacts with it's environment Add tension by including the car Show us what it's like from a horse's point of view by making the car a monster/dragon etc
