First Showing Reflection

For the 'First Showing' I brought along all of the illustration work I have developed over the first week back with my project. Even though I feel like there's pieces that I think aren't working and directions I believe I want to move in etc, I thought it would be beneficial for me to show everything I've been exploring incase something I thought was weaker was actually the piece everyone connected with best or seeing something I've tried sparked an idea for something else I could try etc. I'm glad I made this decision as people really connected with the initial horse character sketches, and suggested that bringing a stronger sense of character into the work could make it more interesting. People also liked the fact that in the horse's POV illustration the car looked like a monster as they felt that this added more humour. Another comment that I received from multiple people was that they really enjoyed the bright colours.

My 'First Showing' Set Up

This critique and feedback session was very helpful as it helped me step back from my work and see how others were responding to it; letting me know what was working, what wasn't working, what needed to be pushed further, and what else I could explore. Coming away from this session already my mind is spinning with new possibilities and problems I need to think about. I suddenly have realised I was already getting to involved in one small avenue (social media) and that I need to take a moment to consider the bigger picture and how I could be more innovative - where else could this project go? I have 12 weeks (11 now!) to work with, so how far can I push myself in that time? I need to step back from just focusing on the illustrations and consider the various methods and mediums I could use to implement these illustrations and actually reach the audience I am wanting to influence.

My Feedback Sheet

Feedback Summary:
  • Try developing more of a sense of the characters as they are the interesting part
  • Make the comic elements bigger to emphasise the action/reactions
  • Add more humour - transforming the motorist (car) into a 'monster' character is starting to get there
  • Would animating parts of it add to the storytelling aspect and help convey the problem easier?
  • Could there be any interactivity for the audience?
  • Could the scope of this project be larger - think about what you can push yourself to produce in 12 weeks and also think about how you can create the most impact for the target audience
  • Social media allows the audience to add their own story - could this be utilised in some way?
