Looking at these articles we can see how confused New Zealand seems to be about horses on the road and how to act around them. Two of the articles tell the story of two different riders who were involved in accidents on the road but there are no statistics offered for how frequently incidences like this happen in New Zealand. NZTA spokespeople are quoted saying that motorists (and other road uses) need to slow down and take care around horses but this is quite a vague response and doesn't really educate drivers in any way. It is also quite obvious that the NZTA do not have any educational or advertising material to produce in these articles to help address the problem.

It is interesting to then look at articles from the UK where The British Horse Society has noticed a lack of statistics on accidents and a lack of awareness/public safety campaigns for horse riders on the road so have set out to do something about it.
