'Third Space'

When I was looking back through blogs from my VCD studio classes last year I came across notes from a lecture on the 'Third Space' (the design epoch we are arguably in, so it comes after postmodernism). I feel like what was in the notes (pasted below) really make me think about my major project and the direction I want to take it/what I want to end up producing. I really resonate with the key points of; creating experiences and conversation, the individual users' transformation, audience input and participation, social dissemination rather than advertising, tapping into people's morals and responsibility to create concern or encourage new behaviour, going back to valuing local community, and valuing a genuine voice.

What is the 'Third Space'?

Emphasis on tangible experiences
Immersion: sense, think, touch, act, feel
Tangible benefits

Individual transformation as product
The customer is the product
E.g. Apple stores, computer shops, gyms

Two-way dialogue
Social dissemination, conversation, audience or user input and participation, rapid decline of interruption advertising

Social Responsibility
“Triple bottom line”: planet, people, profit
Causes and effects, concern, mindfulness…
