Final Survey

Survey Title:

Equestrians On New Zealand Roads

Welcome Message:

This survey is being conducted by Massey University Design Researcher, Georgia Evans, in relation to an Honours project.

This survey aims to provide a better understanding of equine road users in New Zealand and the situations they face. All responses are anonymous but please be aware that by completing the survey you are giving permission for your answers to be used in a research project. Feel free to skip any questions that you do not want to answer.

Questions:

Do you ride, drive, and/or lead horses on public roads in New Zealand?

In what region do you primarily ride, drive, and/or lead horses on the roads?
Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay, Taranaki, Manawatu-Wanganui, Wellington, Tasman, Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast, Canterbury, Otago, Southland

What are your reasons for riding, driving, and/or leading horses on public roads?

How serious of an issue do you believe equine road user safety is in New Zealand?
Scale

Describe typical motorist behaviour (the majority of encounters) when you ride, drive, and/or lead a horse on a public road in your region.

Have you ever experienced a motorist:
  • Overtaking too fast
  • Overtaking too close
  • Following too closely behind you
  • Revving, tooting, or producing other vehicle noise
  • Verbally abusing you
  • Using disrespectful hand signals
  • Throwing an object at you
  • Other (Please Describe)

Why do you think motorists might behave in those ways?

Have you had any accidents or very near misses while riding, driving, and/or leading a horse on a public road? If so, please describe what happened.

Without looking it up, what do you believe the New Zealand Road Code says about how motorists should behave when they encounter an equine road user?

What are your thoughts on the opinion that if motorists understood and empathised with how a horse thinks and reacts they would be more inclined to behave safely and treat horses on the road with respect?

How do you suggest equine road user safety might be improved on roads in New Zealand?
